Welcome to the graduate pages for the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. UBC established the second Anthropology program in Canada with the arrival of Harry Hawthorn in 1947. Anthropology maintained a distinctive program in a joint department with Sociology until July 2006, when it became the Department of Anthropology. The first Master of Arts degree in Anthropology was awarded in 1954, followed by the first PhD in 1970.

Approximately 12 to 16 new students are admitted each year into a graduate student body numbering between 50 and 60 students. We appreciate your interest! Please click on link below this message for details about program requirements, admissions procedures, graduate courses, financial support and graduate theses and dissertations. If you have any questions concerning our program or the application process, please feel free to contact the Graduate Program Assistant for Anthropology: Eleanore Asuncion (anth.grad(at)ubc.ca).
