Anthropology Graduate Studies APPLICATION PROCEDURES

The graduate admissions process at UBC is a collaboration between the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Department of Anthropology. The Faculty of Graduate Studies determines whether an applicant meets the minimum admission requirements which they set. The Department of Anthropology determines if an applicant meets the academic standards required for graduate level study which they have set for the program. Please make sure to visit the Prospective Students section of the Faculty of Graduate Studies website.

Application Form and Fee

Please carefully read the information contained herein regarding admission requirements, tests, awards, documentation, housing and international student information before proceeding to complete the electronic application form. Approximately one hour is required to complete the online form. Currently the electronic application form can accommodate credit card payment only.

Electronic applications are available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies web site at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/apply/online/. Applying online not only saves paper but also allows applicants to check the receipt of their supporting documentation and status of their application online.

Domestic students must pay a non-refundable application fee of $90.00 CAD payable to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. International students must pay a non-refundable application fee of $150.00 CAD payable to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. You can pay by cheque, certified cheque, bank draft (drawn in Canadian funds), or Money Order. If you use the online application form, you must pay the fee by Visa or Mastercard only.

The application fee is waived for international applicants whose correspondence address is located in the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissou, Lao PDR, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Sierra Leona, Tanzania and Uganda.

Applicants whose citizenship is from one of the above listed countries, but are not currently residing in their country of citizenship will not qualify for the application fee waiver.

Please contact the Anthropology Graduate Secretary by email (anth.grad@ubc.ca) or by phone (604-822-2546) to find out how to apply online without paying the application fee.

Supporting Documentation and Material

Language Proficiency Tests
Anthropology requires a TOEFL score of 600 (paper), 250 (computer) or 90 (internet based). The UBC Institution code is 0965.

For more information on TOEFL and other language tests, please visit the following web pages:
http://ansotest.arts.ubc.ca/Language_and_GRE_Exams.1141.0.html
http://www.grad.ubc.ca/apply/how/language.asp

GRE
Please note that the GRE is not required.

Transcripts and Degree Certificates: Two sets of official transcripts of all previous academic work from each university or college attended. If the academic records are in a language other than English or French, you must arrange for certified translations to be attached. Official, original or certified copies of the original records must be received in envelopes sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution. Please note that official degree certificate must also be submitted if your degree is from an instituition that does not indicate on the transcript that the degree has been conferred.

Reference Letters/Forms: Three Reference letters are required for a complete application.  The three references the applicant chooses should be given to individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications. Referees can choose to submit their letter online or by mail.  If by mail, the reference letter must arrive to our department in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the seal. The reference form can be found at:  http://www.grad.ubc.ca/forms/apply_ref/refltr3.pdf.  Please make certain to fill in the correct email address for each referee on your online application, as then the referees will get notification that they have been chosen as a referee and will be given the options of how to submit their letter.

Prospectus: Your prospectus should be around 500 words (two pages double-spaced). It should indicate your proposed area of study, outline what research you plan on undertaking in graduate studies, how you plan to accomplish your research, who you wish to work with, etc. Essentially, it outlines your research interest and intent at the graduate level.

Writing Sample: The writing sample is to assess your writing. It is appropriate but not necessary for it to be on the topic of your grad work. If you are applying for the PhD program, we prefer to have students submit some portion of their MA thesis or major paper because our time commitment to PhD students is greater than for MA students. If you are applying for the MA program, an undergraduate upper-level major paper is appropriate. Please try to limit your writing sample to 20 pages. If you wish to submit a writing sample that is longer than 20 pages, please include a rationale for doing so in your supporting documentation package.

Below is a checklist of documents and materials that must be submitted to the Department of Anthropology for your application. Please send all supporting documents to the Graduate Office at the address below before the application deadline. Please ensure that each of your transcripts and referee letters is in a sealed envelope with the institution's/referee's signature or stamp across the seal. Reference letters and transcripts can be sent directly to the department separate from your application materials.

Once you submit your on-line application, your application form and fee are sent electronically to the Graduate Secretary.
