Information for Incoming Anthropology Graduate Students
Welcome!
Welcome to the new academic year!
We are very happy to welcome you to the Department of Anthropology and at UBC. Wherever this message reaches you, we hope that you are now making plans for the upcoming academic year.
Please browse through this section of our web site, as this information will help you get oriented to the Department, the University and life in Vancouver. Be sure to mark the dates of the orientation sessions offered by the Department as well as by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FoGS). You can access information on those sessions through the link at the left. During the Department orientation sessions, we will go over basic information on what you will need to know in your first year as an anthropology or sociology graduate student. We will provide lunch and there will be ample opportunity to get your questions answered, so make it a point to attend.
You should now have been assigned a temporary or permanent supervisor. Your supervisor will be available to meet with you in the first few weeks of term and throughout the first year, to give you advice on setting up a program of study (such as choosing course, planning for the thesis, and so on), and on finding a permanent supervisor (if you do not already have one) and supervisory committee. Please remember that many faculty and students will not be on campus until the first week of September, so if you are unable to meet with your supervisor before the start of term, please make arrangements to meet soon after classes start.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Anthropology Graduate Secretary at anth.grad(at)ubc.ca for help.
Best wishes for the start of first year! We look forward to meeting you.
