FILIPINA AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIP IN CANADA
Ms. Ledda Docot is the first ever Filipino to be awarded the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. The announcement was made recently by Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, accompanied by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology. The scholarship provides funding for Ms. Docot to pursue her doctoral studies in anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.
One of forty-two international students awarded the scholarship in 2011, Ms. Docot’s research project is focused on the subject of migration in her hometown Nabua,Camarines Sur, and its shifting trends and its impact on local culture.
“The Ethnographic Film Unit, the strong Japanese Studies program at the Asian Center, and of course, the opportunity to work with my research supervisor, all encouraged me to come to UBC. I had also heard many positive things about the Department of Anthropology at UBC – for one, that it is just beside the world-famous Museum of Anthropology,” Ms. Docot said.
International students are nominated by Canadian institutions for a Vanier scholarship valued at $50,000 (CAD) per year for up to three years of study. The program supports 500 Canadian and international doctoral students annually at its full capacity.
“Winning the scholarship will also allow me to expand my film and art projects which are central to my research,” she added.
