Interests & Current Projects: My interests are in the realm of prehistoric archaeology and can generally be subsumed under political economy and technological studies.
My primary research areas are the Canadian Plateau and Northwest Coast, particularly the development of social complexity among hunter-gatherers.
Methodologically, I focus on lithic technology (experimental studies, sourcing, design theory, and use-wear/traceology) and mapping techniques (digital mapping and spatial analysis). My research in the past has focussed (and continues to) on:
1) the development of salmon storage economies on the Northwest Coast/Plateau,
2) ritual structures and secret societies at Keatley Creek (part of a research project directed by Brian Hayden (SFU)),
3) the association of hunter-gatherer technology and environment (part of a research project directed by Mark Collard (SFU)),
4) mapping and exploring the prehistoric population dynamics of large villages in the Mid-Fraser region.
My dissertation project is a geochemical and typological analysis (sourcing) study of nephrite (jade) artifacts in the Pacific Northwest.
Through this study, I hope to shed light on the dynamic nature of indigenous trade and exchange relationships within this region during the last 4000 years, especially with regards to the origins of elites.
